A Hillsborough County man was arrested after soldiers said he tried to break into a woman from Cape Coral and a man from North Fort Myers on Wednesday night.
According to the Florida Highway Patrol, troops responded to the southbound lanes of I-75 near the Hillsborough County southern border at about 9:45 p.m.; a black 2018 GMC Sierra, driven by Dale Patrick Ferris, 43, of New Port Richey, stopped in a traffic lane for unknown reasons with no lights on. Shortly after, an SUV collided with the Sierra, and Ferris then entered the roadway of another SUV, a 2020 Hyundai, driven by a 42-year-old woman from Cape Coral.
The Hyundai stopped to avoid a collision with Ferris, who then produced a shotgun and climbed onto the roof of the SUV. A passing vehicle soon distracted Ferris and allowed the Hyundai driver to speed away. Moments later, a tractor-trailer driven by a 62-year-old man from North Fort Myers stopped and the driver jumped out of the vehicle to offer assistance. Ferris then jumped into the trailer to steal it, but failed as he was unable to shift into gear or release the air brake.
The tractor driver and another witness, a 38-year-old man from Harrisburg, South Dakota, tried to stop Ferris, who kicked both men in the face and chest. Ferris then left the trailer when deputies from Hillsborough and Manatee counties arrived and arrested him.
FHP soldiers later arrested Ferris and took him to Hillsborough County Jail, where he faced more serious charges of assault with a deadly weapon, armed robbery, carjacking, display improperly firearms and open fire in public places. Soldiers recovered a handgun and some used shell casings, noting the bullet holes only fell on the roadway.
