‘He’s too good’: Legend ‘not surprised’ £30m ace could join Newcastle

John Hartson believes former Celtic star Kieran Tierney is “too good” to be a substitute for Arsenal as Premier League rivals Newcastle United are a potential target for the Scotland international.

earlier this week, President of the Real Sociedad A move for a player crying out for a fresh start after falling out of favor at one of England’s biggest clubs is all but impossible. But while Donny van de Beek may not be headed for the Basque Country after all, reports suggesting Arsenal’s Kieran Tierney could swap north London for San Sebastian before the end of the month are reluctant to leave.

Tierney wasn’t even included in the Arsenal squad for Saturday’s 2-1 win against Nottingham Forest.

Accordingly the athlete, Sociedad are interested in signing a loan deal with Arsenal. The Gunners would prefer to sell, however, and that could play into the hands of Newcastle or West Ham; two clubs far richer in money than LaReal.

Newcastle United have their sights set on Arsenal’s Kieran Tierney

“After being at Arsenal for a couple of years, he was unable to secure a regular place. “We all thought he was going to go there and destroy the Premier League,” says Hartson, the Celtic legend who talks to about the Hoops’ former left-back Go radio.

“We know about his talents. But obviously (Oleksandr) Zinchenko came from Manchester City. He’s a serial winner. He’s won titles and everything else is a wonderful player. He can play at left-back, he moves to midfield, he’s another outstanding player, Zinchenko.

“I know that Kieran can play several positions, for example as a centre-back. But with (William) Saliba and Gabriel there…

“They have some brilliant centre-backs too, Arsenal.”

Accordingly the telegraph, Newcastle think a deal could go through for Tierney, even if Arsenal’s asking price of £30m is a little too expensive for a man who only played six Premier League games in 2022/23.

Under Eddie Howe, Tierney would be free to do what he does best; He flies over the flanks and hits flanks from the sidelines. At Arsenal, full-backs are expected to push into midfield rather than maintain width.

“I’m not surprised he’s on the radar of several clubs,” adds Hartson. “Especially a club that is on the rise worldwide in Newcastle. He’s too good not to play every week.

“He was completely out of action over the weekend and didn’t even come on as a substitute. Arsenal went on and won 2-1. I don’t know if he’s injured or taken a hit, but maybe the relationship with the manager isn’t that good.”
