‘He’s Marty’: Stephen Graham Says Martin Scorsese Has ‘The Right’ To Criticize Marvel Movies

Stephen Graham has offered his take on director Martin Scorsese’s infamous remarks about Marvel and DC movies.

The acclaimed director made headlines in 2019 for his stance on superhero films, as he claimed they failed to explore the emotional and psychological complexities of being human to qualify as cinema.

“I do not see her. i tried you know But this is not a cinema,” he said at the time.

His comments sparked an ongoing debate about the legitimacy of superhero films as art. Above all, Spiderman Star Tom Holland disputed Scorsese’s words last year, saying he considers Marvel films to be “real art.”

Other high-profile figures who dove into the series included Iron Man actor Robert Downey Jr., Samuel L. Jackson, comics writer Kevin Smith, and director James Gunn.

Graham collaborated with Scorsese in the Oscar-nominated film The Irishman in 2019 and also starred in Marvel’sVenom: Let there be carnage last year.

In a new interview with The Independent published on Saturday (November 19), the boiling point Star was open about Scorsese’s views, saying that he “has the right” to feel the way he does.

“He’s Marty. Marty can say whatever he wants and I will agree with him at that particular moment,” he said. “He’s Martin Scorsese. He has that right.”

Elsewhere in the interview, Graham had kind words for Andy Serkis, who was briefing him Venom: Let there be carnage and also played the villain Ulysses Klaue in Avengers: Age of Ultron and Black Panther.

Graham called Serkis a “fantastic director,” adding, “He’s one of the people I looked up to as an aspiring young actor. He’s a character actor that I really love because I try to see myself as something like that and I try to find the truth in those characters.”

Graham will be playing soon Matilda the musical as the father of the bookworm, Mr. Wormwood. Read along with his full interview The Independent here.
