An increasing number of customers claim that they have been charged, even arrested, and sent to prison after Hertz falsely claimed the cars they rented were stolen.

There were 191 lawsuits in federal bankruptcy court from Hertz customers who said they were arrested on false grounds on Friday, according to the filing. CBS News. Among the customers who said they were wronged, there were some who didn’t even rent their own transport.

A NASA employee driving a Hertz SUV was seen in video obtained by the television station raising his hand as Florida police officers pointed their guns at him. Hertz had filed a stolen car report 3 days earlier about the car NASA had rented for him. The unnamed employee was not charged, and authorities released him.

Similarly, Steven Robinson said he doesn’t rent a car from Hertz. But police arrested him for car theft in June and he spent two days behind bars and is being charged with felony charges.

‘I mean, this was the worst experience of my life. And I couldn’t believe Hertz and that’s a good slogan I’ve heard, but Hertz really breaks people’s hearts,’ Robinson told CBS News. ‘Their sloppy practice is like, horrendous.’

Meanwhile, Carmen Bosko rented a car from Hertz in Florida in January and said she returned it in April. But police in Georgia arrested her for car theft in August and she spent 40 days in jail for her two-month-old and two other children.

“I had to explain to my children why I was gone for 40 days,” she told the broadcaster. ‘And I missed time with my youngest that I will never get back.’

Unlike NASA staffers Robinson and Bosko, Rejeana Meado has not been arrested – but fears she will. Meado rented a Hertz for three days for a wedding in Houston in May and returned it on time.

However, she said Hertz emailed her last week saying they had reported the car stolen.

‘I have a husband. I have children. It’s horrible,’ Meado told CBS News, in tears. “Sorry… My doorbell rings and I’m afraid the police are coming to arrest me.”

Attorney Francis Alexander Malofiy says many Hertz clients think they are an isolated incident.

“They don’t realize that this is a system-wide problem that’s happening across the country,” Malofiy told the station.

Hertz declined to comment on recent reports but in a statement November 2 said lawyers representing upset clients ‘have a track record of making unfounded statements that misrepresent the facts’. .

“The vast majority of these cases involve lessors who have been weeks or even months past the due date and who have stopped communicating with us past the due date,” the statement read.

‘Instances of vehicles being reported to the authorities are very rare and only happen after best efforts have been made to reach customers.’
