Heather Rose Strickland has been identified as the Florida woman whose body was found in a garbage bag off the Gulf Coast

The FBI has identified the deceased woman, who was found wrapped in a garbage bag off Florida’s Gulf Coast last weekend, and is now describing her death as “suspicious.”

Heather Rose Strickland, 34, was the woman found floating off Egmont Key at the mouth of Tampa Bay on Saturday, the FBI’s Tampa field office said.

“Heather Rose Strickland was last seen on December 5, 2022, exiting HCA Florida Largo Hospital at 201 14th Street Southwest in Largo, Florida,” the bureau said. “Strickland is originally from the North Florida area and has spent the last five years in Clearwater-St. Petersburg area.”

“The FBI is asking for the public’s help with any information that will help law enforcement piece together the events leading up to Strickland’s death,” it added.

Strickland’s body was first found by fishermen working in the area.

Witnesses said they spearfished when they made a dive. When they went to the next spot, they found the garbage bag. They tried to pick it up, but quickly realized it wasn’t trash.

After cutting open the plastic and canvas bag inside, they said they saw skin and what was believed to be a bra strap or bikini. Witnesses said they called 911 shortly after the discovery.

“The body was found wrapped in bedding in a plastic garbage bag,” the FBI said, noting the discovery was made 13 miles offshore.

The FBI described Strickland as approximately 5 feet 5 inches tall, with “a tattoo on the right side of her neck of ‘B’ and ‘E’ in Old English script and a rose tattoo on the outside of her right thigh.”

The FBI has been the lead agency investigating the incident since the body was found in federal waters.
