Heartstopper star Yasmin Finney explains why there was a problem with Eddie Redmayne playing a trans woman in The Danish Girl

Last week it was announced that Finney, an 18-year-old actor who is trans, is joining the cast of Doctor Who in 2023.

Redmayne’s appearance in The Danish girl, which plays trans artist Lile Elbe, earned the actor an Oscar nomination. However, the casting drew significant criticism, with many arguing that the role should have been played by a trans woman.

Speak with The guardFinney discussed the success of heart stopper and her new one Doctor Who role before we steer the conversation to the question of whether cisgender actors should adopt trans roles.

“[Redmayne] did such a great job,” she said. “I do not have a problem with that. What I have a problem with is when people search for the cast The Danish girl and they see Eddie Redmayne isn’t trans and it was all a lie.

“Unfortunately, there’s an image that trans people have of we’re not who we say we are.”

Finney also spoke about the importance of trans actors being cast in cis roles.

“I think we really will [have] change if I can play a character whose gender identity or sexuality isn’t stated,” she said.

“Then the industry will start to see trans actors as regular actors like everyone else and we can play any role we want. If I can play a cis role, there will be sunshine and rainbows.”

Redmayne himself has expressed regret that he agreed to star The Danish girlHe recently called his casting a “mistake”.
