Heartbroken mother of Brooklyn shooting victim speaks through translator about ‘scared’ as 16-year-old son undergoes major surgery

THE heartbroken mother of a teenage victim of Tuesday’s Brooklyn subway shooting speaks out about her anxiety through a translator as her son undergoes major surgery.

The 16-year-old was one of the few teenage victims of the shootingcorresponding Governor Kathy Hochul.

Speaking outside Brooklyn’s Maimonides Medical Center on Tuesday night, Hochul provided an update on the handful of pediatric patients she was visiting.

One victim, a 16-year-old, underwent hand surgery. Hochul said doctors “were able to bring his thumb back to life” after he sustained injuries in the shooting.

He is expected to be released tomorrow but has a long recovery ahead of him, Hochul said.

Hochul spoke to the boy’s mother through a translator. She is Chinese and was alone in the hospital.

“All she has is her son,” Hochul said.

The mother expressed her concern about the situation through the translator. To add to her stress, she recently lost her job as a domestic help.

“Let’s make sure she has one less thing to worry about,” Hochul said, appealing to anyone who may be looking for a caregiver.

Hochul said five patients aged 12 to 18 were treated at Maimonides.

She noted that the younger victims were released after being treated for smoke inhalation and not necessarily gunshot wounds.

Hochul spoke to the families of the 16- and 18-year-old victims who are still in Maimonides during her visit.

Doctors at the medical center told her they “monitor blood work” to make sure no toxins get into the victims’ blood.

Many of the youngest victims were on their way to school at the time of the shooting, she said.

As the investigation continues, authorities are investigating all possible motives while the search for the suspect continues.

“Certainly people feel terrorized by this action,” Hochul said when asked if she believed this was a terrorist incident.

“In my heart, this is a terrorizing action to strike fear into the hearts of New Yorkers. But they don’t know who they’re dealing with.”

Hochul urged New Yorkers to be vigilant as authorities continue to search for a suspect, but stressed the subway ride is safe.
