HIGHLANDS RANCH, Colo. (KDVR) – While most children enjoy sleeping on this snowy day, an eight-year-old boy from Highland Farm got up in time for his dialysis appointment.
Forrest Holt is currently on the waiting list for a new kidney and he hopes you can help. His mother asked FOX31 Problem Solvers to help spread the word.
In Colorado and Wyoming, there are nearly 2,000 people on waiting lists for life-saving organ transplants. 85% of them are waiting for a kidney. Holt has waited all his life.
“He just needed a normal life,” said his mother Tonia Reynolds. “He needs to wake up, have breakfast, and go to school and not have to go to and from the hospital so many times a week.”
Forrest has been through a lot in his eight years. He spent the first 356 days of his life in five hospitals. He was born with a congenital vascular defect in his leg. When he was about four months old, he started bleeding profusely, bleeding for eight hours straight. That led to kidney failure, 80 surgeries, and 300 blood transfusions. His mother has recorded it all on FacebookForrest has pretty much all of the following.
They are hoping to find a living donor to give him a new kidney. Forrest said he just wanted to go to school to be with his friends.
“He was pretty heavy already, but he had the most contagious smile, wherever we went, whether it was the grocery store, the park, meeting new people, even just walking past. hospital so that from appointment to appointment, people are really hooked. with him,” Reynolds said.
Time is of the essence, the average person only lasts 5 to 10 years on dialysis, and Forrest has been on dialysis for 8 years.
“If we can get a living donor, that would be huge,” Reynolds said. “I think it’s time for him. It means everything to me. It was a long journey. I just want him to be able to run around and play with other kids.”
While they are looking for a match for Forrest, they also want to raise awareness of the need for living donors. To see if you are suitable click here.
