Peter Schmeichel and Jamie Carragher argued over the quality of Arsenal goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale compared to David Raya.
The Liverpool legend boldly claimed that Arsenal “won’t win the Premier League” with Aaron Ramsdale between the sticks and that the on-loan Brentford star was “100%” the better player.
But legendary goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel had a different opinion, admitting that Aaron Ramsdale had “convinced me” after previously questioning why Mikel Arteta had signed the player from Sheffield United in the first place, as he said CBS Sports on Paramount+ (9/20/23 at 7:35 p.m.).
On Wednesday night, as Arsenal beat PSV 4-0 in the Champions League, Mikel Arteta decided to put David Raya between the sticks for the second game in a row – Thierry Henry shared his own thoughts.
This is probably another sign that Aaron Ramsdale is now starting to lose his number one spot.
This decision doesn’t sit well with perhaps the greatest goalkeeper of the Premier League era, as he argued with Carragher over the situation
Raya Ramsdale debate
“Do you think Raya is a better goalkeeper than Ramsdale? Because I don’t do that,” asked Schmeichel. To which Carragher replied: “100%. With Ramsdale in goal, Arsenal will never win the league. No chance.”
Schmeichel then replied: “That’s a big statement, Jamie.”
JC: “Ramsdale is playing well for Arsenal. He doesn’t even make the England national team.”
PS: “That’s a whole other debate and I don’t understand it.” But I think he did it tremendously well. I didn’t see that when he signed from Sheffield United. I honestly didn’t understand why Arsenal spent so much money on Ramsdale because I didn’t see it. He convinced me. A very consistent and stable goalkeeper. Makes very few mistakes. What surprised me is how he plays with his feet. Its distribution. Participate in the game. I don’t understand why Arteta wants to create this problem (having two number one keepers).”
JC: “Raya is much better with his feet than Ramsdale.”
PS: “They shouldn’t have signed anyone. That is the point.”
JC: “They should have done that. Absolute nonsense.”
Will Ramsdale respond?
Whether on Sunday against Tottenham, in the League Cup against Brentford or in the next Champions League game.
Ramsdale will get his chance at glory again and this is where he must answer his critics or those who question him.
And the truth is that one of them has to be his manager. There is clearly something about Ramsdale’s game that Arteta doesn’t like, so it’s time for the England international to raise the bar.
