Harry Potter book gives trigger warning about ‘difficult conversations’

UNIVERSITY students were warned about JK Rowling’s first Harry Potter book – which elementary school kids often read.

It told them it could raise “difficult conversations about gender, race, sexuality, class and identity”.

And they are encouraged to raise concerns if they have problems with the themes of the boy wizard’s story.

Harry Potter and The Philosopher’s Stone is one of three volumes of text for English language graduates at the University of Chester.

The others are by Suzanne Collins The Hunger Games and Philip Pullman’s Northern Lights.

Students are asked to see instructor Dr. Richard Leahy if they find these books offensive.

Trigger warning says: “Although we are working on anthologies of texts aimed at youth, the nature of the theories we apply to them can lead to some difficult conversations. ”

Toby Young, of the Free Language Alliance, notes: “Harry Potter books teach children the importance of resilience. A trigger alert will send the opposite message. ”

The university said it “encourages rather than avoids” discussion of complex issues.
