H-TOWN TAKEOVER: Dana Holgorsen, head football coach at the University of Houston, announces a contract extension through the 2027 season

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) – University of Houston football head coach Dana Holgorsen has agreed to a contract extension through the 2027 season, Houston vice president of athletics Chris Pezman announced Thursday.

The six-year extension comes fresh from Houston’s record-breaking 2021 season. Holgorsen’s third at the top was highlighted by 11 straight wins, an American Championship Game appearance and a Birmingham Bowl win over the Auburn Tigers.

“We’re excited about where we are and the direction we’re going,” Pezman said. “Having Dana locked up for six years prior to our conference change was important for continuity. We look forward to our future with Dana at the helm.”

Houston’s 12-plus win season in 2021 was the third in program history. The Cougars were one of six teams to rank in the top 20 nationally in both points per game (35.9) and opposing points per game (20.4).

“This is a long-term commitment,” said Holgorsen. “I am very grateful for the leadership and investment of Tilman Fertitta, Renu Khator and Chris Pezman. I can’t tell you how excited I am to be at the University of Houston for the foreseeable future.”

Over the course of his career, Holgorsen has coached 22 All-Americans, 11 national award winners, and 14 national award finalists. In his three seasons in Houston, four Cougars were selected in the NFL Draft, including a first-round pick.

Holgorsen came to Houston after eight seasons as head coach in West Virginia, where he led the Mountaineers to seven bowl games. The Mt. Pleasant, Iowa native finished his tenure as the program’s second-best head coach behind a record of 61-41.
