Gunman killed in shootout with law enforcement in New York

A gunman was killed in a shootout with police officers conducting an undercover drug operation in Upper Manhattan on Friday night, sources said.

Federal agents and NYPD officers were attempting to conduct a controlled drug purchase at an apartment on Vermilyea Ave near Academy Street in Inwood when two suspects opened fire inside around 8:45 p.m., police sources said.

Police returned fire, fatally hitting one of them, sources said. The other man was taken into custody.

No police officers were injured. It is unclear which agency or department fired the fatal shot.

Sources said two guns were recovered from the scene.
