Greta Gerwig was “afraid” that “Barbie” would ruin her career

Telling the story of life in plastic didn’t immediately sound fantastic to filmmaker Greta Gerwig.
The 39-year-old actress-director admitted she was nervous about taking on the ‘Barbie’ movie starring Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling.
“It was terrifying. I think it has something to do with starting from that point of, ‘Well, anything is possible,'” Gerwig told Dua Lipa on the singer’s recent At Your Service podcast. “It felt like dizziness to write it. Like where do you even start? What would the story be?
“The best stuff is usually there. When you say, ‘That’s what I’m scared of,'” she added. “Anything where you’re like, ‘This could be a career ending,’ you’re like, ‘Okay, I probably should do it.'”
Gerwig also gushed that bigwigs from Barbie doll maker Mattel were “amazing partners” for the film, granting her a level of “trust and… freedom” that she says is “incredibly” rare.

“What we wanted [the film] being, they weren’t trying to micromanage it,” she told Lipa. “They were fully involved as a partner and that was extraordinary.”
Though plot details for the upcoming flick have yet to be released, Gosling previously told Jimmy Fallon that it’s “the best script I’ve ever read.”
The Notebook star Gosling also described his character Ken as a “loser” with no money, job, home or car, but clarified to the late-night host, “These aren’t plot details. These are just objective facts about Ken. This is the Ken life.”

What we do know is that fashion in film is breaking the internet, as evidenced by the images of Robbie and Gosling on set in fun costumes that went viral this summer.
Robbie later said she was “embarrassed” by the paparazzi’s presence and said that photographers capturing the actors on neon roller skates was “the most humiliating moment of my life”.

The film features a star cast including Will Ferrell, Issa Rae, America Ferrera, Michael Cera, Kate McKinnon and Simu Liu – with the latter admitting that waxing his body for the rumored role of another Ken doll was “one of the most painful experiences.” of my life.”
Barbie hits theaters on July 21, 2023.
