Green Party NC petitions under criminal investigation

RALEIGH, NC (WNCN) — A criminal investigation is ongoing after a third party hoped to vote in the North Carolina state fall election.

The NC Green Party, it hoped, provided enough petition signatures to run for the US Senate. The party had to collect 13,865 signatures because it had received enough votes in the last gubernatorial election to reach the required threshold.

After a closed session Thursday morning, the North Carolina State Board of Elections said there was evidence some signatures were fraudulent.

The state board was initially informed by several district electoral boards there were irregularities.

The NCSBE said there are criminal penalties if the allegations are proven true.

When Greens attorney Oliver Hall asked the board if the votes in question would get them under the required number of signatures, the board chairman said he could not comment on a criminal investigation.

The NCSBE voted not to certify the Greens as eligible for the fall election.

NCSBE officials recommended that the North Carolina General Assembly pass legislation making it illegal to pay signature collectors per petition signature.

In a statement, Green Party leader Tony Ngege said:

“In a democracy, the majority should rule. Our petitions have far exceeded the threshold and all signatures submitted by petitioners. According to the state statute, their votes should be recognized “immediately and without delay”. In North Carolina, anyone can collect and sign petitions because they have been certified by county boards.”

This decision was grossly undemocratic and unethically overruled the decisions of the county boards. There are clearly very powerful forces using tremendous pressure and resources to silence us and the message of ending wars for profit, living wages and political independence for working people. We will not be deterred, knowing that history will acquit us.”

This is an evolving story and will continue to be updated.
