Granite Xhaka warned Arsenal teammates, they must be more dignified away from home if they hope to secure a place in the top four of the Premier League.

The Gunners produced one of their most successful performances of the season so far last night, putting that aside West Ham at the Emirates thanks to second-half goals from Gabriel Martinelli and Emile Smith Rowe.

Mikel Arteta’s team has launched controversy surrounding his decision to ax captain Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang aside and overtake their London rivals in the group and advance into the last place in this season’s Champions League qualifying for the first time.

Arsenal currently have the best home record in the league, but their form on the road could undermine their aim to return to Europe’s elite club competition with recent defeats to Everton, Manchester United and Liverpool highlight the problems that are still evident in Arteta’s emerging side.

Leeds, meanwhile, will bounce back from Tuesday’s humiliating defeat to Manchester City and Xhaka has been encouraging his team-mates to be ‘smarter’ as they face their relegation-threatened side Marcelo Bielsa.

“We are playing much better at home but if you want to be in the top four you have to win and you have to get points away too,” Xhaka told Stadium Astro.

‘Hopefully this can start on Saturday against Leeds. But yes, we have to improve, we have to be more skillful, we have to be tougher.

‘We cannot play the same game at home and away. We have to be more skillful and start from experienced players to young lads. ‘

Arteta, meanwhile, was delighted with last night’s bubbly display and hopes his youthful side can build on a promising one.

He said: ‘I’m really pleased with the performance, the attitude, the commitment and the quality we’ve shown in the game, as well as the chemistry we’ve created again with supporters.

To win a home game is really important, because it sets the tone of the whole team against a really good team, it’s very difficult to dominate like the way we did today. ‘
