Graham Norton took aim at the royal family on Friday (December 2) during the launch of his eponymous chat show.
As always, Norton started off with some topical jokes and showed the audience a photo of Prince William and Kate Middleton attending a recent basketball game in Boston, USA.
“I couldn’t be more excited and intrigued if I were Prince William and I was looking at a basketball,” Norton said before the photo, which showed William staring at the ball in perplexity.
“Hasn’t he ever seen one?” he asked in disbelief. “It’s like his godmother talking to a black guy.”
Norton mocked the recent scandal involving Lady Susan Hussey, a former lady-in-waiting to the late Queen Elizabeth II and William’s godmother.
The charity’s founder, Ngozi Fulani, attended a reception hosted by the Queen Consort as she said Hussey persistently asked her what part of Africa she was from after telling her she was British.
Hussey has since been forced to step down from her role as royal assistant at Buckingham Palace, expressing her “deep apologies for the damage caused” in a statement.
William, who is currently in the US preparing for the final edition of his Earthshot awards ceremony, also issued a statement saying that “racism has no place in society”.
Speak with The Independent Of their encounter, Fulani said, “That’s bigger than one person. It’s institutional racism.
“What’s the lesson here? When I drove into the palace the car was searched and we were searched as you would expect because they have to protect the household. But what protects us blacks from this treatment? This incident is unfortunate and shows that nothing has changed.”
