On September 29, 2022, Google announced it would be ending its Stadia streaming service and would be providing refunds to players affected by this decision. For those unsure of the shutdown process, here is a guide on the date and time Google Stadia shutting down its servers and how to get refunds for your hardware and software.
When will the Google Stadia servers shut down?
Google Stadia will shut down its servers on January 18, 2023. An exact time for the shutdown has not been announced at the time of writing. Players will no longer be able to purchase games as the Stadia Store and all in-game microtransactions ended on September 29, 2022. Players who have pre-ordered unreleased games will have them cancelled, and those who have already been charged their pre-payment. Orders will receive a refund.
Players will still be able to play all of their own games until that date, although Google anticipates that “some gameplay issues will arise during this time,” particularly for those games that involve microtransactions. Unfortunately, if the game doesn’t allow cross-progression on other platforms, which certainly won’t be the case for games published by Google Stadia’s closed in-house studios, all in-game progress will be lost when the servers close.
How do I get a refund for Google Stadia?
Google is offering refunds for all Google Stadia hardware purchases made through the Google Store, including controllers, Founders Edition, Premiere Edition, and Play and Watch with Google TV packages. “Most” of that hardware doesn’t need to be returned to Google, although they promise they’ll release more details on how to get a refund for your Stadia hardware purchases in the coming weeks.
Players can also get refunds for all games and add-on purchases made through the Google Store, but Stadia Pro subscriptions are non-refundable. Those who have an active Stadia Pro subscription will not bear any further fees until the January shutdown date, but will still be able to access their Pro Library and other subscription entitlements.
Because the refund process will likely vary between “each country and different situations,” Google is still trying to figure out the best way to issue refunds. However, the intention is to automatically issue refunds to the original payment method by January 18, 2023. All customers who have purchased Google Stadia hardware and software will receive an email from Google. Customers who no longer have their original payment method can choose an alternative payment method. So don’t ignore this email and follow the instructions carefully so you don’t miss anything.
