Gloria Estefan brings three generations to the family album

Mariah Carey may be the self-proclaimed Queen of Christmas, but Gloria Estefan wants to rule the entire holiday season.

The legendary Latina singer just released her second Christmas album, Estefan Family Christmas, which was performed at the 98th Annual Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade and will perform at the National Christmas Lighting Ceremony: Celebrating 100 Years, which airs December 11 on CBS is broadcast.

This surge in holiday spirit came during the pandemic, when many gatherings were canceled or scaled back.

“I felt robbed of the last two holiday seasons because of COVID and everything else,” Gloria, 65, told The Post.

Traditionally, the Estefan family’s Christmas season begins at Gloria and husband Emilio’s Miami home with a Thanksgiving singalong, led by the couple’s grandson, Sasha Estefan-Coppola, who sings of gratitude for each year. ‘

But when Sasha, the son of Nayib, Gloria and Emilio’s eldest child, and his wife Lara Coppola, celebrated his tenth birthday this year, his voice began to change.

“I wanted to capture Sasha’s voice when he was a kid because he said to me, ‘Tutu, if I try to hit some notes, something weird happens to my voice,'” Gloria recalls. “And he had grown four inches in the last few months. I was like, oh man, here it comes.”

So she decided to produce a cross-generational album with daughter Emily, 27, an accomplished singer herself. Even Emilio, Gloria’s prolific music producer husband (Ricky Martin, Jennifer Lopez, Jon Secada, Marc Anthony, Thalia). and Shakira) made his signing debut with Sasha on two tracks.

“Emilio said it was his first and last time,” Gloria said. “He wasn’t very happy that I produced him because he’s usually on the other side and never wants to be told what to do. But boy did I have fun doing it. He was into it because how many people get the opportunity to record a song with their grandson?”

There are 17 tracks on Estefan Family Christmas, ranging from covers of classics like Wonderful Christmastime and I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus to the family song Thankful that started it all. Even the chipmunks got a repeat with the many Estefans’ dogs and cats howling to the chorus of “The Chipmunk Song (Christmas Don’t Be Late)”.

There’s also an intentional retro feel that extends to the cover image. “We tried to evoke a Beach Boys album cover that we loved,” Gloria explained. “It’s supposed to look like an old album cover with the paint worn off. If you look closely you have Em very confidently the center of attention. Because I truly believe this is her moment. Then Sasha looks to the future and I look to Sasha, this is the new order for the Estefan family. Here comes our little prince.”

“We wanted to immortalize his childhood voice before it changed,” Gloria said of Sasha.

Still, Gloria wants Sasha to enjoy being a kid. “We wanted to immortalize his childhood voice before it changed,” said Gloria. “Right now we are all altos. There are literally parts where you can’t tell who’s who when we’re playing harmonies because we have this similar timbre.”

The talented family has a lot to celebrate this year, including Gloria’s starring role in the hit summer film Father of the Bride. The HBO Max remake has reportedly garnered the largest audience for a streaming-only film, wowing audiences with its Latin flair and girl power theme.

“If you’re doing a remake of anything, especially something that’s a classic, you’re taking a risk,” Gloria said. “But we were so excited about the script and the fact that it had a new twist. Women have a bigger role, especially the mother, than in previous incarnations. The film really emphasized the role of women in their families. And it was such a joy. I had the time of my life.”

Though, she admitted there was one thing that made her nervous: kissing Andy Garcia, who plays her embattled husband in the film.

“Andy and I are really good friends, so there’s chemistry there,” Gloria said of her co-star, whom she has known for almost 40 years. “We love each other very much. Well, I’d much rather kiss a friend like Andy. But I have to tell you, I was nervous. Because it’s a strange thing. I know he’s kissed countless women, but he’s the only other man I’ve kissed in the last 47 years. I shipped Emilio out of state for it.”

The Estefans’ true love story – the autobiographical musical On Your Feet! – is still making the rounds across the country as a regional touring production, having played on Broadway from 2015-17. It chronicles the couple’s journey from Cuban refugees in Miami to international superstardom, set to hits like “Rhythm is Gonna Get You,” “Conga,” “Get On Your Feet,” “1-2-3,” and “Coming Out of.” the dark”. A newer Spanish version debuted in Washington, DC that year, with future productions planned in Spain and Argentina.

In 2021, the family also revealed another layer of their lives by opening up about their daughter Emily’s coming out on Red Table Talk: The Estefans, a spin-off of Jada Pinkett Smith’s talk show.

“In one fell swoop, I lost my mother, and at the same time, Emily had to go through her struggles,” Gloria recalled of the turbulent time around 2017. “Em wasn’t comfortable saying what was going on with her, which was hard for me to do.” see, because all we’ve ever done is be very open and vocal in our support of the LGBTQ community.”

“We wanted to share this experience because we feel it’s important for families to talk about these things, especially Latinos who tend to find these topics taboo,” the singer added. “And while they may know, accept and love someone, they don’t want to talk about it. You don’t feel well. But the person coming out needs to hear words of support and love.”

Gloria wants to make it clear that despite her wealth and fame, not everything is perfect. “We’re a celebrity family and people think, ‘Oh, everything’s going great,’ which it really is, don’t get me wrong, we have a very beautiful life,” she said. “But we are human, just like everyone else.

“Through music we try to unite cultures and people. And we just keep doing that, because for me that is the most important contribution we can make.”

And indeed, Gloria Estefan has decided that Mariah Carey can keep her title: “I’m already the conga queen, so she can keep the Christmas queen if that’s what she likes.”
