Glenn Hoddle has warned Levi Colwill he will be “exposed” if he faces a “flying winger” despite dealing with Mohamed Salah in Chelsea’s 1-1 draw with Liverpool on Sunday.
The 20-year-old, who was on loan at Brighton and Hove Albion last season, was used in the starting XI by Mauricio Pochettino in a heavyweight opener for Chelsea.
Although Hoddle has expressed his doubts about Levi Colwill, he believes he ‘did really well’ against Liverpool star right-back Mohamed Salah, he said Premier League Productions (08/13/23 at 18:45).
Although Salah left the field a bit down in the second half and some now had doubts about his future, he could still claim he was Liverpool’s best player.
For someone like Colwill, this is one of the ultimate tests of the season against this Liverpool defence. Yes, they have problems in midfield and defense but the deadly attack is still there.
After Colwill opened his season in Chelsea colors yesterday, Hoddle shared his thoughts on the player facing Salah.
“I think Colwill could be found out if you have a flying winger,” Hoddle said. “He won’t be tested any more than Salah, will he? All seasons.
“He handled it really well. He’s a good player, Colwill.”
Colwill will be an England international very soon
It’s only a matter of time before Gareth Southgate calls him up as he has earned seniority qualification.
Over the summer, Colwill helped England Under-21s win the European Championship, adding to his performances for Brighton last season which took them to the Europa League.
With John Stones the only reliable and consistent England defender, Colwill needs to get that nod sooner rather than later.
