Billie Eilish Review, Glastonbury 2022: The history-making set is 90 minutes of noir-pop catharsis

Five stars for Billie Eilish and her stunning 90 minute set at Glastonbury on Friday night.

In its own way, Eilish’s historic headline set is as significant as Jay-Z’s or Stormzy’s. Not because she’s the festival’s youngest winner, although it lifts the roof off Tik-Tokker’s teenage dreams of stardom in every bedroom.

But because it marks the rise of alternative pop: a homemade, personalized imitation of the mainstream that speaks much closer to the actual teenage experience of 2022. Certainly more than any number of ultra-confident, over-sexualized breakup birdflips written by long-in-the-tooth Swedish production teams.

Alternative pop tones are dark and downbeat, their emotions raw and broken, their concerns doom-heavy. Fame comes with insecurities, sex is regrettable and drugs when mentioned are generally prescribed for anxiety.

Fans curious about Billie Eilish ‘leg tattoos’

Billie Eilish fans were left confused by what some believed to be “tattoos” on the singer’s legs while she made record-breaking headlines at Glastonbury.

The 20-year-old singer became Worthy Farm Festival’s youngest-ever solo headliner with her performance on Friday 24 June.

During her set, Eilish was spotted using what appears to be kinesiology tape, which is used with the aim of reducing the effects of shin splints – a type of leg pain caused by strenuous activity.
