Girl, 14, shot dead by police at Burlington North Hollywood Coat Factory during LA suspect takedown

LOS ANGELES – Los Angeles police shot dead a 14-year-old girl in a clothing store’s changing room on Thursday when they fired on a suspect who had assaulted a woman earlier, authorities said. .

Authorities said the male suspect was also killed in the police shooting. The assaulted woman was taken to hospital with moderate to severe injuries.

The shots were fired around 11:45 a.m. at a Burlington store – part of a chain formerly known as the Burlington Coat Factory – in the North Hollywood section of the San Fernando Valley.

Police are initially responding to reports of a person being attacked with a deadly weapon as well as reports of shots being fired, Los Angeles police captain Stacy Spell said at a news conference. Spell said officers opened fire when they saw the suspect assaulting another person.

Spell said the suspect was hit by officers’ bullets and died.

One of the bullets penetrated the dressing room wall and hit the 14-year-old girl, according to LAPD Assistant Chief Dominic Choi. The staff later found her inside.

“You can’t look into the dressing room and it’s just like a straight plaster wall,” Choi said at his second press conference.

Investigators still don’t know if the teen was in the changing room before the abuse began or ran in there to hide, he said.

Choi said authorities still don’t know the man’s motives or whether he knew the woman he initially assaulted in the store.

Los Angeles Fire Department spokesman Nicholas Prange said the woman suffered moderate to severe injuries and was transported to the hospital. It was not immediately known if she was shot, but Choi said she suffered injuries to her head, hands and face.

Police found a heavy metal cable lock near the suspect that they say may have been used in that attack.

Spell said the injured woman was the victim in the first report of assault. It was not immediately clear what type of weapon was involved in that attack.

He added that police had received calls about the suspect acting erratically prior to the incident.

Imelda Garcia said her sister worked in the store and was taking a break when she heard gunshots and people started running. Garcia said she spoke to her sister on the phone and she was fine but sounded “really worried”.

Police escorted people out of the store nearly two hours after the shooting.

This story has been revised to reflect that the shooting occurred at a Burlington store in North Hollywood, part of a chain formerly known as the Burlington Coat Factory.
