And she should know, like Tina, who in her fifties, recently transitioned from a freelance career in marketing after her job dried up when Covid-19 hit.

“I did two months of training that was quite intensive but very interesting and started in March 2021.
“My role is very fulfilling. I build relationships with my clients – some of whom are going through tough times and I’m always here to help. I meet some amazing people and it’s gratifying to feel like I’m making a positive impact on their lives.”
One of the people who has benefited from Tina’s expertise and help when asked is her client, Steve, 63, a single grandfather from Manchester. After three decades in the military, he was working at Manchester Airport as a baggage handler and ground-to-flight liaison as he was added to his time in Covid. Then, in September 2020, he was appointed redundant.
“Steve is a man of presence and minded personality, so taking into account his military background, we decided to explore the area of security,” Tina said. She signed Steve with Job Goals Support (JETS), a six-month program for people who have been out of work and claim benefits for 13 weeks or more, and it worked. represents a turning point.
Steve said: “Tina has been very supportive – she has helped me in so many ways. Sometimes I feel quite frustrated – I feel bored at home, missing the players and the teamwork at the airport. I also worry about how I will find a job at sixty. But when I had a biweekly meeting with Tina, she really encouraged and lifted me up. She gave me a lot of confidence.”
Through JETS, Steve was given more advice on the different fields that might be open to him, along with help with his CV.
“They updated my CV and added things that I never thought of – like how I am a firefighter and first aid officer in the Army,” Steve said.
Meanwhile, Tina helped him sign up for a course to get his SIA (Security Industry Authority) license, which is essential to working in the field, as well as further training in customer service. , diversity and health and safety. She also provided him with bus tickets to go back and forth to courses and job interviews.
Finally, in November 2021, Steve’s hard work and Tina’s support paid off and Steve was hired as a security officer in a supermarket.
“It’s a really fun job – I love shouting at people,” Steve said. No, seriously – I’m tough but polite. I try and have a laugh with clients but can be serious when asked.
“When I told Tina I was getting the job, she was on the moon. I can’t speak highly of her – if you’re over 60 and worried about finding a job, the help and advice of a work coach is great. ”
