According to a report, a German diplomat working in Brazil has been arrested for allegedly fatally beating his 20-year-old husband and then trying to cover up the crime.
Uwe Herbert Hahn, who works as Germany’s consul in Rio de Janeiro, is accused of killing Belgian husband Walter Henri Maximilien Biot on Saturday – just a week before his 53rd birthday, according to a report by the Straits Times.
Hahn reportedly told officials Biot died after a combination of alcohol and sleeping pills caused him to become ill, collapse and hit his head, police officers said.
However, a forensic report revealed that Biot – who was found at the couple’s beachfront apartment in Ipanema – had been brutally beaten, officials said.
The report revealed that Biot’s body had “various bruises, including torso, consistent with pounding injuries, as well as lesions consistent with a cylindrical instrument attack,” officer Camila Lourenco said on social media, according to the report Media.
“The version of events given by the consul, that the victim suffered a fall, is inconsistent with the conclusions of the forensic report,” said Lourenco of Rio de Janeiro’s 14th district.
“The corpse is screaming out the circumstances of her death,” she said.
Hahn is accused of not only lying about his husband’s death but also trying to cover up the scene before police arrived, the news site reported.
Hahn will not receive diplomatic immunity because of the seriousness of the allegations against him, the outlet said, citing local media.
