Gerard Butler’s Kandahar begins filming and adds new cast

The film reunites Butler with director Ric Roman Waugh, which was shot in Saudi Arabia.

Gerard Butlermilitary horror movies Kandahar started filming in Saudi Arabia, Deadline report. Directed by Ric Roman Waugh, the film will mark another team for the director and lead, who have previously worked together Greenland and fallen Angel. Two new cast additions have also been announced, such as Ali Fazal (Death on the Nile and Victoria & Abdul) and Navid Negahban (Countryside, 24, and Soldiers) will join Butler in the film.

The story revolves around Tom Harris (Butler), a CIA agent who has been operating undercover into enemy territory in Afghanistan. With the Afghan interpreter by his side, the agent needed to go to Kandahar to be rescued. However, the duo will need to be very careful as they are being hunted by enemies as they try to run away.

Kandahar will make history by becoming the first US film to be shot entirely in Saudi Arabia. Filming will take place in the AlUla region in the northwest of the country in the city of Jeddah. TAn agency called The Film AlUla have been working hard to showcase their beautiful lands and bring more international filmmaking activities into this area.

Original script written by Mitchell LaFortune, who built the story on his personal background and close-ups, was working as a military intelligence official at the time of the Snowden leak. John Wick Thunder Road Films producers will partner with Capstone to co-produce the new film. Capstone will also provide financing alongside Middle Eastern media group MBC Studios.
