Georgia US Senate runoff between Warnock and Walker too close to call

The last tie Senate contest in the 2022 midterm election is still too close to call after polls closed in the Georgia runoff between Democratic Senator Raphael Warnock and Republican former NFL star Herschel Walker.

With 70% of the vote, Warnock Walker leads by a slender margin of 50.3% to 49.7%.

A win by Warnock, 53, would secure a full six-year term for the incumbent, who won a special election in January 2021 to retain his Senate seat, and extend the Dems’ control of the Senate to 51-49.

The full-term runoff was forced after neither Warnock nor Walker received more than 50% of the vote in the November 8 midterm election.

While the race was close at press time, political analysts said the results were in favor of a Warnock victory.

“At this point, voter turnout in Metro Atlanta would have to be unusually high for Warnock (D) to lose,” said election analyst Dave Wasserman wrote in a tweet. “It’s going to be close, but he’s in the driver’s seat now.”

Wasserman also pointed out that in several Georgia counties won by Walker, his winning margin isn’t as great as it was on Nov. 8.

“Camden Co. (Coast): Walker +33.2 in November, Walker +31.8 today. Another good result for Warnock (D)”, Wasserman written down.

Among them was Morehouse College graduate actor and director Spike Lee spotted at Warnock campaign headquarters Tuesday night in hopes of celebrating a possible Democrat victory.

Walker allies, including former Georgia Republican Senator Kelly Loeffler, gathered at the College Football Hall of Fame in Atlanta on Tuesday night for the campaign’s election night vigil party, where the stage was set up on a bill soccer field in front of a big #34, Walker’s number when he played for the University of Georgia football team.

The hotly contested race produced some of the biggest political guns on both sides, with former President Donald Trump and Republican South Carolina Senator Lindsey Graham trailing Walker while ex-President Barack Obama and President Biden rallied for Warnock.

Warnock, a former pastor at Atlanta’s Ebenezer Baptist Church, is fighting for the seat he won by defeating Loeffler in the 2021 special election. Loeffler was appointed to fill the position created by the resignation of ailing then-Republican Senator Johnny Isakson in late 2019.

Ahead of Election Day on Tuesday, early voting in the Peach State set a series of daily records, and nearly 2 million ballots were already cast before Friday’s deadline.

Warnock had a lead of up to 5 percentage points over Walker ahead of Tuesday’s contest, according to a RealClear Politics poll average.

If Walker clinches a win, the 50-50 split in the upper chamber would remain as it has been for the past two years, with Democrats relying on Vice President Kamala Harris to cast crucial votes.
