Gary Neville and Co have made Ed Woodward an easy scapegoat for Man Utd’s decline… but the wobble is not entirely his fault.

The easiest thing to judge Ed Woodward’s time in charge of Manchester United is to blame him for everything.

After all, that’s what Gary Neville every time he picks up the microphone.

Neville never hinted how he would do it differently, however, he is just happy to lead everyone in defeating the easiest scapegoat at Old Trafford.

Of course Woodward will forever be associated with help Glazer take over because of 2005.

However, let’s not forget David Gill, who disputed it, continued to work under them until Woodward finally got his role in 2013.

His exit and Woodward’s promotion never mattered, it was Sir Alex Ferguson The resignation leaves the new board of directors in charge with the task of guiding United through the most difficult period in a quarter of a century.

He accepts the mistakes he made.

There is no suitable structure for David Moyes To take over.

The problem is that the structure is Sir Alex’s, there is no database to mine for the new boss.

Woodward, 50, believes he gave Louis van Gaal too much power, leading to scattered gun recruitment.

He doesn’t regret the appointment Jose Mourinho and two trophies and a second place finish is testament to that.

But, as many top soccer players will tell you, Special One is not an easy client to deal with long term.

For Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and long-term planning, it’s on the right track.

A second place finish, five semi-finals and a grand final.

This time last year they were at the top of the league together and at the start of the season things were going really well.

But when things started to unravel at United, it happened very quickly and disappointed fan base, raised on glory years, wants someone to blame.

Three trophies, two more major finals and two runners-up in the past five years would be considered glory years in somewhere like Tottenham.

Without the league, however, Woodward himself would accept his tenure as unsuccessful.

As of today, they are in the same position they were at the end of his first season in 2013-14 – seventh and 22 points behind the leaders.

He looks at those sliding door moments when a date with another manager could take the Reds down a different path.

But already Pep Guardiola not always bound because City of Manchester and Jurgen Klopp because the Liverpool.

And will Carlo Ancelotti or Antonio Conte offer anything different in the short term than Mourinho.

However, he may wonder, if Mauricio Pochettino one of them has disappeared.

The Argentinian has been waiting for a club between November 2019 and January 2021 and could still end up at Old Trafford this summer.

Truly the greatest advice Woodward will give it to his successor is making sure they make that appointment and have someone in the next five or six years.

The good things Woodward has done behind the scenes are overlooked in the same way he reversed the lack of investment in the squad that Gill oversaw during Sir Alex’s final years.

His business and commercial acumen, along with Richard Arnold, allow funds available.

Proof that business and modern football simply go hand in hand.

The debt from the Glazer takeover had to be repaid and none of the rich oligarchs financed it.

So Woodward had to go out and get the money to make sure the succession managers could come up with their own plans.

He did it very well but too often he allowed himself to take all that he had, in fact, the power assigned to a football structure that was trusted to recruit and perform.

He’s always fighting and trying but at times definitely has to feel like he’s walking in the sand as Man City, Liverpool and Chelsea win trophies.

Eventually European Super League, with an elitist tone and no relegation or promotion, sat with him so badly that he couldn’t support his bosses, the Glazers trying to see through it – so he I quit my job.

The threats he received during his tenure, which resulted in his wife stopping playing the game, and protesting outside his Cheshire home couldn’t help but admit its fault for a father of young twins.

He’s made mistakes but what football executive doesn’t and he doesn’t deserve all of this.

To meet him is to find a funny, attractive man who loves to talk about the game and wants the best for United, yes, on the pitch.

His biggest regret was his statement to an investor on a zoom call, in which he said United’s finishing position in the league would not affect their finances. .

This time he shook his head. It seemed like he didn’t care what was going on on the pitch, and he did it very deeply.

Now is Arnold’s time to pick up the heavy baton of history and expectation – good luck.
