GARNER, NC (WNCN) — Thousands of people grabbed their beach chairs and blankets on Sunday and made their way to Garner’s Lake Benson Park.
The city welcomed families to take part in the annual Independence Day celebration – the day before July 4th.
Garner Mayor Ken Marshburn said it was their biggest event of the summer.
“It’s just a really family-centric and family-friendly event that the city loves to host and we hope it stays that way for a long time,” he said.
Marshburn said her big fireworks show at the end of the night is usually what keeps people coming back year after year. But the celebration also includes performances by the North Carolina Symphony, adding a unique, old-fashioned patriotic touch.
Marshburn said he wasn’t sure higher gas prices would persuade more people to stay in town and choose events like Garner’s to celebrate locally, but either way he also expects a bigger Sunday night crowd .
Skylier Slaughter, who attended the celebration with her husband and children, said they decided to get to the event early to get good parking.
As a military family, she said, “Obviously, being in the military means a lot to be free and to come out and party.”
Slaughter said it was an event the whole family enjoyed, but after a long afternoon in the heat, she said there was one thing she was looking forward to – a nice, cold, air-conditioned ride home.
She laughed and looked at her 1-year-old boy named Jett and said, “It was fun, huh?”
