The England v Wales World Cup game had a surprise cameo appearance in the form of Chesney Hawkes.
Singer Hawkes performed his #1 hit single “I Am the One and Only” at halftime in Qatar in 1991.
After a mutually stunning first half, those in attendance joked that Hawkes was the night’s standout performer.
The IndependentChief Football writer for , Miguel Delany, tweeted: “Chesney Hawkes plays ‘The One and Only’ at half-time between England and Wales. I have no idea why this is happening.”
“Chesney Hawkes singing ‘I Am The One Only’ at half-time might be the highlight so far… yes it was that bad,” added football writer John Cross.
Daily MailDominic King, football correspondent for the North, praised: “One verse and one chorus and Chesney Hawkes is already the best performer of the night.”
Referring to the BBC’s coverage of the event, led by Gary Lineker, The times Reporter Elizabeth Ammon wrote, “Please stop talking to these five guys and show me Chesney Hawkes.”
Meanwhile, @DrBeauBeaumont said: “This entire nation is being robbed of a Chesney Hawkes halftime show right now.”
Perhaps inspired by the claims, Marcus Rashford and Phil Foden started the second half by scoring two goals in the space of a minute. Rashford scored another goal 17 minutes later.
