Frustration is growing in Shanghai, China amid strict COVID lockdowns

Frustration is boiling over in Shanghai as residents increasingly chafe under weeks of draconian coronavirus lockdowns.

On Chinese social media on Saturday, netizens fought to share a six-minute video titled “The Voice of April.”

The footage showed a panorama of the city’s empty streets and also included voices from locals complaining about food and medical shortages that have plagued the metropolis.

However, netizens faced backlash from China’s army of web censors, who fought all morning to have the video removed. Some comments have managed to survive.

“All I can say is if you don’t even want to hear some real voices then it’s really hopeless,” said one dispirited social media user.

The city has faced a brutal lockdown to stamp out the latest wave of the coronavirus. Shanghai on Friday reported 12 new coronavirus deaths. The average age of victims was 88 and none were vaccinated.
