Work has begun to render some of the United States’ most spectacular natural settings and historic icons altered. The Great American Outdoor Act was passed by Congress last year and set aside up to $1.6 billion a year for the next five years for widespread maintenance and repairs that have stalled year after year. The Home Office said the funding would go towards key projects in national parks, forests, wildlife sanctuaries and other areas. Some of the first projects completed in October included cleaning the marble walls of the Jefferson Memorial and restoring the historic brick ovens at New River Canyon, but dozens more Other renovations are going on.
