SAN MATEO – Four 16-year-old boys were in a juvenile hall on Thursday after being arrested in connection with a fatal shooting at a shopping mall, authorities said.
In a statement, police said officers responded at 5:34 p.m. Wednesday to Hillsdale Mall, 60 31st Ave., after receiving calls reporting take a shot.
When officers arrived, they were directed to the parking lot of a store, where a 20-year-old man with a gunshot wound was surrounded by bystanders.
After providing emergency life-saving measures, officers cleared the crowd so paramedics took him to hospital, where he was later listed in critical but stable condition. and is expected to survive.
Investigators soon learned that several people had fled the parking lot shortly after the shooting and worked with witnesses to gather information, including shopping mall surveillance camera footage, that would help detectives the suspect is identified.
Four teenagers were arrested Thursday and taken into custody at Hillcrest Juvenile Hall on suspicion of gun assault, attempted robbery and conspiracy to commit a crime, police said.
Soon after, detectives joined Belmont police officers and delegates from the county sheriff’s drug task force and gang intelligence unit to execute arrest warrants at several locations, obtained evidence of the shooting.
Although police say there is no ongoing threat to the public, investigators are still looking for other possible suspects and related crimes.
