Former New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio has officially announced that he is running for Congress, saying his “years of service to the people of this city” make him the right candidate for the job.
The Democrat, whose term as mayor ended on Jan. 1, confirmed that he will be running in the race for New York’s newly drawn 10th congressional district on Friday morning.
“Surveys show people are hurt, they need help, they need help fast, they need leaders who can actually help them now,” he said in an interview on MSNBC.
“I know how to do this because I’ve served the people of this city for years.
“So today I am declaring my candidacy for Congress in the 10th congressional district in New York.”
The 10th congressional district stretches across parts of the two New York boroughs of Manhattan and Brooklyn.
Under a new redistribution plan, released as a draft on Monday, the Lower Manhattan borough — where Mr de Blasio lives — will include Brownstone Brooklyn and Borough Park in Brooklyn.
The seat is currently open after current District Assemblyman Jerry Nadler announced he will instead run for the 12th District after the redrawn maps mean his Upper West Side home now falls within that district .
With no incumbent to beat, several Democrats are said to be eyeing the 10th congressional district seat.
Mr de Blasio’s latest ambitions come after a failed White House bid in 2020 and months after he left the mayoralty with low approval ratings.
Mr de Blasio spent much of his time as mayor sparring with former Governor Andrew Cuomo before the latter resigned amid a spate of sexual harassment allegations.
