I look out the window and bask in the peaceful scenery of the sandy and shingle beach, lined with quaint wooden beach huts.
“It’s very quiet here, even in the summer, and there’s plenty of free parking right on the beach – but we like to keep our secrets,” said the beautiful Annmarie Grice cheerfully, begging me. Don’t spread the word about Goring -by sea.
I escaped to the seaside town in West Sussex for a kid-free weekend with a group of girlfriends.
This small and relatively suburban neighborhood boasts quality brunch spots, a charming seaside promenade and a tranquil atmosphere.
Much less busy than the famous Sussex seaside towns of Littlehampton, Worthing and Bognor Regis, Goring-by-Sea has everything you want for a fun beach getaway, but without the packed beaches and packed restaurants.
Strolling along the shore, I watched kites gliding in the waves and sailboats bobbing on the horizon.
A little further down the Blue Flag Victory curve is a fish stall selling seafood caught that morning.
Unlike many traditional UK coastlines, you won’t find roller coaster arches or jetties here.
Instead cute fishing boats are pulled up on a tranquil shoreline and a large grassy bank separates the houses from the beach, making it feel even more secluded.
We passed the bustling Sea Lane Cafe, where locals relax on lazy mornings, enjoying croissants and donuts.
It’s a popular spot, with well-placed outdoor tables to enjoy the view and stalls filled with pastries.
If water sports are your thing, paddleboards and kayaks can be rented at Worthing Watersports.
Less than a mile away, our weekend road, Sea Dreams Resort, sleep ten.
This large, modern home features a spacious dining room, conservatory and living room with plenty of seating.
The quaint bamboo chairs decorated with shaggy white cushions and the brick fireplace give the place a rustic charm.
Another great benefit of the house is that it is walkable to a station, meaning large groups can leave their cars at home and travel by train together.
Be sure to check out the neighboring Ferriing village if you’re in the area.
We walked the bush-shaded shoreline, past cyclists and dog walkers, until we reached BlueBird Cafe, a great place for a late breakfast.
If you can comfortably walk along the beautiful South Downs and pitstops are not your thing, there’s a lot more to do.
Lovely, and free, Sky Garden It is 1.6 km from Goring and the market town of Arundel with the famous castle is only a 10-minute drive away.
The larger resort of Worthing also just five minutes from the coast with an art deco pier – voted best in the UK in 2019 – and an observation wheel.
Although it may be one of the most peaceful spots on the West Sussex coast, Goring is by no means boring.
