Foreign infant formula shipments surge amid US shortages

The White House announced that more than 20 million bottles of baby formula will soon be flown into the US to help fill an ongoing nationwide shortage.

First, the equivalent of about 16 million eight-ounce bottles of Gerber formula will be flown from Mexico to Fort Worth, Texas, on Friday and distributed to retailers, officials said Wednesday.

About 5.5 million bottles of Bubs nutrition were en route to Los Angeles this week from Melbourne, Australia, and Philadelphia in early July, and more than 1.5 million Nestlé bottles were shipped from Germany to Texas, a series of reports said press releases.

As part of President Joe Biden’s “Operation Fly Formula” mission, federal agencies have joined forces to pick up state-approved shipments of infant formula from international retailers and fly them back to the States to get them on shelves faster.

The US is grappling with baby formula shortages that began due to supply chain problems during the COVID-19 pandemic and were exacerbated by the closure of the country’s largest formula factory amid a deadly bacteria scare.

Abbott Laboratories closed its Michigan facility in February after the Food and Drug Administration investigated whether two bacterial deaths in infants and two other diseases were linked to the facility.

The facility reopened in early June but said it would take eight weeks for new formula production to hit store shelves.

The FDA announced Wednesday that it is investigating the death in January of another baby who had consumed factory formula.

The agency hasn’t definitely linked Abbott to any fatalities, but its investigation uncovered numerous violations at the facility.
