Florida Rep. William Puzynsk climbs a building to rescue a year-old girl from an Orlando apartment fire

ORLANDO — A Florida congressman climbed onto the outside of an apartment building to rescue a one-year-old girl from a fire early Saturday, and the dramatic scene was captured with the congressman’s body camera, officials said.

The baby and her mother struggled to escape after a fire broke out at the Isles at East Millenia complex, the Orange County Sheriff’s Office said in a release.

Deputies responded to the scene just before 4:15 a.m. and found the mother and baby on a third-floor balcony, with flames emanating from the apartment, the press release said.

Rep. William Puzynski climbed onto the second-story balcony, took the baby from her mother and lowered it to other MPs on the floor, video shows.

“Just before he climbed the building, Deputy Puzynski removed his heavy outer ballistic vest, which had his camera attached, to help him climb,” the press release said.

“When I got here, we saw the building completely engulfed. There was chaos everywhere,” Puzynski told CNN affiliate WKMG. After handing the baby over to his partners, Puzynsk was also helped downstairs, he told the news outlet.

“After that, when the mom came and found me, she actually hugged me, so it was a treat,” he said. “It’s a different feeling. Some nights you go home not really knowing if you’ve made a difference, but in situations like this you feel it.”

The baby’s mother and grandmother were rescued using a ladder, the sheriff’s office said. No casualties were reported and no MPs were injured in the fire, officials said.
