Florida man William Redden was arrested after video showed him dragging the lifeless body of Stephanie Shenefield

A Florida man has been arrested and charged with molestation of a corpse after he unknowingly provided police home surveillance footage showing him dragging the lifeless body of a 38-year-old woman through his home.

William Redden, 51, allegedly wrapped the body of Stephanie Shenefield in a sheet before dragging her lifeless body to his car and driving to a ditch where he dumped her remains, according to the Manatee County Sheriff’s Office.

How the woman died was unclear.

Shenefield, a mother of two, took an Uber to the home of Redden, a suspected drug dealer, at 1:20 a.m. Friday, June 3, investigators said.

Sometime during the night, Shenefield died at the home and Redden allegedly disposed of her body rather than calling for help, Manatee County Sheriff Rick Wells said.

“William Redden isn’t doing anything about it,” Sheriff Wells said at a news conference broadcast on WTSP Tampa Bay 10. “He doesn’t call 911, he doesn’t call authorities, he doesn’t call anyone.”

Redden, an eight-time felon, told detectives that Shenefield stayed at his home that night – but left the next morning.

Investigators have yet to determine Shenefield's cause of death.

The detectives then asked Redden if they could take the DVRs from security cameras inside and outside the home. He agreed, saying the cameras at his home aren’t recording and are just a “live surveillance system,” according to the sheriff’s office.

“He tells them not to record at the apartment. He was wrong,” Wells said. “Thankfully he’s ignorant and didn’t know that. Because it worked for us.”

To the surprise of investigators, the video revealed the final moments of Shenefield’s life and provided clues as to how her body ended up in a ditch in Palmetto.

Detectives confirmed from video footage that Shenefield was in Palmetto at Redden’s home and died there that night. Investigators have not yet released any information about the cause of death.

Redden can then be seen “dragging her lifeless body around the house” and loading it into a car before driving off, Wells said.

Two people walking their dog found Shenefield’s “heavily decomposed” body Thursday, June 9, in a 12-foot-deep drainage ditch near railroad tracks, according to the sheriff’s office.

The Florida mother was reported missing after Sunday, June 5, when she failed to show up for work and also missed a concert on Friday night.

“William Redden is a piece of crap, he is. He had an opportunity to call law enforcement, call 911 to try and rescue her,” Wells said.

“He could have done many things, but that’s not his character,” he added. “The only thing on his mind was trying to get rid of the evidence in his car – that was a human; that was someone who was truly loved in that community.”

Redden was charged with abusing a corpse, possession of a firearm by a criminal and possession of an altered firearm. Additional charges are expected to be filed as the investigation progresses, Wells said.

“We will continue to investigate this, but we want you to know that our hearts are breaking for Stephanie’s family,” the sheriff said.
