Florida boy fatally shoots 11-year-old brother Shemarion Burse

A 13-year-old son of a correctional officer accidentally killed his 11-year-old brother on Thursday while he was messing with a handgun they found in their parents’ Florida bedroom.

Shemarion Burse died afterwards from a gunshot wound to the chest, Miami-Dade Police said.

Shemarion was at his home in the Horizons West complex with four siblings, ages 9 to 15, when he was accidentally killed by his brother, 7News reported. There were no adults at home at that time.

A neighbor said she heard screams around 5 p.m. and rushed to the unit.

“I called 911. I went into the house. The baby was there, blood everywhere,” said the neighbor, who asked not to be identified.

She began mouth-to-mouth resuscitation until Shemarion stopped breathing.

The boy was flown to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

“Blood on the wall, he just lay there and breathed his last and it was just traumatic,” the neighbor said.

MDPD detective Alvaro Zabaleta confirmed that Shemarion’s mother is a Miami-Dade Correctional Officer, but said who owned the gun.

The police do not expect to press charges in the tragic case.

“I’m heartbroken about the whole situation,” another neighbor, Geraldine Ostanne, told CBS. “I just don’t like hearing about these stories about guns in homes. I think it must be very difficult for the family who are devastated by the whole situation.”

“Even though the gun was in a safe place, I don’t think they should be around children at all. They shouldn’t even know where guns are.”

Shemarion’s mother, Tiffany Callaway, remembered her son, who the family affectionately dubbed “Fat Boy,” as “loving, playful, and always there to put a smile on your face when you needed it.”

“Imaging [sic] Life without him is something we never thought we would have to do as a family, and worse yet, we must put him to rest,” she wrote on a GoFundMe page about the boy’s funeral expenses.
