ALMOST 36 years after the famous 80s childhood shooter, the life of a Flight of the Navigator star couldn’t be more different.
From turning his back on fame to getting entangled in a life of crime, it’s been a very exciting three decades for the former actor.
Joe Cramer, now 48, is best remembered for playing David Freeman in the 1986 film that saw his character abducted by aliens and transported to the future.
He’s starring alongside a young person Sarah Jessica Parker in cult classics. However, while SJP continued to gain A-list popularity thanks to Sex and the City, Joe went in a very different direction.
After shooting the film, Joe aspired to be a “normal kid” again, but found he didn’t quite fit in with other kids his age after the huge success of Flight of the Navigator.
I said Daily Star: “I just want to be a normal kid again, having fun, skateboarding and all that,” he said.
“But once I went back to school, I didn’t quite fit in anywhere.
“I’ve been teased because I’m a ‘kids movie star’, so I adapt what I can – and it’s easy to mingle with the bad guys who smoke and drink and smoke , so that’s what I’m aiming for.
“I got into cocaine at a very young age – 14 or 15 years old.”
After a period of rehab, Joe moved to Mexico at the age of 20, where he rehabilitated well and lived clean for 10 years.
But at the age of 30, he fell from his car. “I was at a party and people were lining up. I thought, ‘Maybe I can just do one or two,'” Joe said.
“The problem with addiction and trauma is that if we don’t address the problem, it will just stay there underneath, seeping in, and at some point it will come out.”
In 2007, he was arrested for drug possession before he became addicted to heroin in 2011.
Then, in 2016, he was arrested in British Columbia and charged with robbery, disguising himself with intent to commit a non-prosecutable offence, nonstop for a peace officer, and operating a dangerous motor vehicle.
At the time, he was homeless and a drug addict and claims he robbed a bank to force himself to get help.
He said: “I was in a really bad place and I knew about this therapeutic community, Guthrie House, inside the prison. It was a relief when I was arrested.”
Last year, it was reported that Disney would be rebooting Flight of the Navigator.
