Flea market shooting: 2 dead, 3 injured in shooting at Latia Pancha on Airline Drive, Harris County lawmakers say

HARRIS COUNTY, Texas (KTRK) — A man has been arrested in connection with a fatal shooting at a busy garage sale Sunday afternoon in northern Harris County, according to the Harris County Sheriff’s Office.

Around 1:00 p.m., deputies were responding to a shooting at La Tia Pancha on the 8800 block of Airline Drive in which several people were shot dead, according to deputies.

Several men drew guns surrounded by a crowd of hundreds of people enjoying their Sunday afternoon at the popular flea market.

Two Hispanic men were killed and three other Hispanic men were hospitalized in critical condition with gunshot wounds.

HSCO said the shooting stemmed from an argument involving all of the injured. Several people walked and walked to get their guns before returning to the flea market and opening fire, according to the sheriff’s office.

Despite a busy market packed with families and children, no innocent bystanders were hurt.

“There’s a lot of people up and down the airline here just trying to get out and enjoy the flea market and have something to eat and drink, so it’s very tragic,” said Major Susan Cotter of HCSO.

Several handguns were secured at the scene, which is why investigators assume several shooters. MPs say some of the men fled before officers arrived and at least one of the men at the hospital is a possible suspect. However, MPs are still waiting to interview the three at the hospital

Angel Flores-Lopez, 27, is accused of tampering with evidence after the shooting. ABC13 state records claim he was caught on video taking a gun from the gunman’s waistband and hiding it. A judge set bail at $7,500.

Flores-Lopez has a long criminal history dating back to 2011 and is rife with misdemeanor charges including possession of marijuana and tampering with government records.

Family members identified one of the victims who was shot and killed as 29-year-old Juann Romero.

His sister Yeraldi Romero said her older brother goes to flea markets to enjoy his Sunday like any other weekend. According to Yeraldi, Juan was with her cousin, who is one of the three injured at the hospital. She wants to know how a day at the flea market turned into such a tragedy.

“This tragedy happened and I don’t know why,” Yeraldi said. “He always made everyone laugh, very happy, cheery, so it really hurts because he’s my older brother and I look up to him. It’s very hard.”
