“Flaming Liquid”: Raleigh releases 5-day report on police fatally shooting man accused of throwing Molotov cocktails outside train station

RALEIGH, NC (WNCN) – Raleigh police fired 30 rounds during the fatal shooting at a man they say burned two squad cars by throwing Molotov cocktails at them outside a police station.

The city released its five-day report on Friday after Attack and shooting on May 7thby breaking down the 16 minutes that elapsed between the officers first arriving and their guns being fired.

The report details the events leading up to police fatally shooting 37-year-old Reuel Rodriguez Nunez at the department’s Southeast District Station at 2800 Rock Quarry Road.

According to the report, Nunez set the two squad cars on fire before removing a gas can and an unidentified container from the passenger compartment of his van, placing several white cups on the ground in the parking lot, pouring liquid into them and sitting in the back of his van with the tailgate open .

According to the report, Nunez threw three cups of the unidentified liquid at Lt. MF Schabel was driving the vehicle and then threw a Molotov cocktail at Schabel’s vehicle – which the lieutenant withdrew from the crime scene.

Three officers asked Nunez to stop, but he poured “flaming liquid” on Schabel’s vehicle, according to the report, and officers backed away.

According to the report, Nunez was heard telling officers, “Today…is my day…to…move on,” and threw another Molotov cocktail at officers while walking toward them.

Four officers then slowly approached him, and the report states that Master Officer PW Coates repeatedly told Nunez, “Go ahead (expletive), do it, do it,” and asked other officers to “give me the green light.”

When Nunez lit another Molotov cocktail and began throwing it in Coates’ direction, all four officers fired. The flaming liquid hit the ground where Coates was standing, missing him only because he swerved, the report said.

Preliminary results showed that 30 rounds were fired and about 16 minutes had elapsed from Schabel’s arrival to the officers firing.

Afterwards, detectives determined that Nunez’s van and his physical description matched that of someone who had attempted to set fire to a gas pump at a convenience store on Capital Blvd the previous night.

The four officers were transferred to administrative duties in accordance with departmental policies.
