Fernandes finally smiles and Elanga is ready to stimulate but De Gea fails again with sly defense

MANCHESTER UNITED looked home and dropped deep – until once again defensive weakness saw them face Aston Villa.

Bruno Fernandes scored twice to put Ralf Rangnick’s men up to 2-0 at Villa Park.

But two goals in five minutes from Steven GerrardTowards the end of the game, United stunned United and showed there were still big problems to fix.

And it was Philippe Coutinho, came on from the bench on his Villa debut, who scored a dramatic 82nd-minute equalizer to share the spoils.

Here, SunSport reporter John Hutchinson evaluate how United’s stars performed during their trip to the Midlands.

David De Gea – 8

An incredible save in the 35th minute when he denied Emi Buendia at empty range from a corner.

He was there again to deny a definite equalizer in the 47th minute to thwart Jacob Ramsey’s effort. Untouchable at the moment.

Diogo Dalot – 6

It remains difficult to figure out whether the Italian has a future at Old Trafford. Looks neat enough but not strong enough when attacking.

He was scored in the second half anyway, where he completed a solid enough task on Villa’s wingers.

Victor Lindelof – 7

Looks a lot more secure next to Varane – which is unsettling for Harry Maguire.

Feel free to get the ball out, and win your air battles when necessary.

Rafael Varane – 7

With his top form, you can see exactly what the Frenchman brings to the team.

The confidence on the ball and just having that, sadly captain Maguire doesn’t seem to have it right now. But guilty to watch the ball when Coutinho scored the equalizer.

Alex Telles – 6

It was tough to usurp Luke Shaw at left-back, but Rangnick seems to like something about the 29-year-old Brazilian.

His dexterity with a small touch in the free-kick helped Fernandes score the opener.

Fred – 6

Started neat and tidy, but as the game progressed he became worse in his position as Villa struggled to find the equalizer.

There was an assist for Fernandes’ second – more than good enough at that – but then completed the job by sending the ball straight to Villa’s Jacob Ramsey to score his team’s goal.

Nemanja Matic – 6

Come on in place of the suspended Scott McTominay, and he must have enjoyed the first half as he controlled the midfield.

Got a yellow card in the second half as Villa threw everything forward.

Mason Greenwood – 7

There seemed to be a freestyle role in the first half, starting from the wide right, then moving to the left before going deeper.

The boisterous surroundings present a constant threat to Villa’s backline.

Bruno Fernandes – 8

Great opportunity to prove his worth with compatriot Cristiano Ronaldo missing through injury – and became a player with a clever strike that saw Martinez own an own goal.

Things were even better for the Portuguese star when he finished excellently to make it 2-0 and the smile returned to his face.

Anthony Elanga – 8

Owner Rangnick says he was close to starting on a winger against Villa in the FA Cup – this time he gave the Swede his big chance.

And he did not disappoint. United would love to see a winger display confidence when attacking the opposing full-back.

Edinson Cavani – 6

His movement caused the Villa defenders a lot of trouble in the first half.

But compared to the usual high performance, the Uruguayan player is somewhat inferior.
