Fans are reacting to never-before-seen footage of Princess Diana’s first public appearance after it surfaced online
Princess Diana became one of the most photographed women in the world when she and Prince Charles started dating, and it continued throughout their lives. Now, never-before-seen footage shows the future Princess of Wales stepping out of her home for the first time after the press learned she and the future king were in a relationship and royal fans had some violent reactions to the clip.
In May 2022, a video of Diana’s first public appearance after the world learned she was dating Prince Charles was released on the Royal family Youtube channel. While some may recall seeing stills and clips from that day, September 18, 1980, the broadcaster called this particular footage “never seen before.”
It shows a 19-year-old Lady Diana Spencer trying to hide her face from the paparazzi as she leaves her apartment and walks to her car. Many Royal fans shared their reactions to the video.

“My heart is breaking again,” wrote one commenter.
Another said: “Want to cry! It felt like yesterday. A shy young lady was the prey of paparazzi for years until her last moment.”
A third person added: “In the beginning I always felt so bad for her that I had to deal with it on my own. It’s even sadder in hindsight.”
“What a beautiful girl she was… sadly the beginning of the end. The way she passed the exam was beyond reproach,” commented a fourth person. “Still missed and loved. Her life was tragic.”
A fifth said: “Anyone who has had anything to do with using this sweet, innocent lady to his or her advantage over the years must take responsibility for every tear she has ever shed and every heartbreak she has ever had endured. Was it worth it in the end??? When I see earlier recordings of their everyday life, I cry. Behind every public figure there is a person and a soul.”
And another remarked, “It’s so sad to think that this was supposed to be the beginning of a happy fairy tale but instead it was the beginning of the end for her and in 17 years she would be dead.”
The paps never stopped following Princess Diana
As many commenters noted, the paparazzi never stopped following the princess.
Diana was relentlessly pursued until the final moments of her life, when she and Dodi Fayed attempted to evade photographers by exiting the Ritz Hotel in Paris through a back door on that fateful August night in 1997. But they couldn’t escape the paps who pursued them as they drove away in a Mercedes S-280 sedan. This vehicle, driven by the hotel’s head of security, Henri Paul, and traveling at high speed, eventually crashed into a pillar in the Pont D’Alma tunnel, less than two miles from the Ritz.
Paul and Fayed were killed instantly, but Diana survived and suffered multiple injuries. She was taken to La Pitie Salpetriere Hospital, where she died a few hours later, on August 31, 1997.
