DUDLEY, NC (WNCN) — First responders and the community-lined Highway 117 Friday afternoon for the life of fallen Sgt. Matthew Fischmann.
Sergeant Fishman and two other deputies from the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office were shot dead on duty earlier this week.
The procession began in Greenville and ended in Wayne County as hundreds of people parked their cars along the streets to show their respect. Sergeant Fishman died on Tuesday – after being shot dead on Monday morning – trying to deliver involuntary pledge letters to a house in Dudley.
Those who knew him and his wife are still in disbelief.
“I actually grew up with his wife Sara, she and I met when we were 6th Great,” said Stephanie Moody, who was at the procession. “It’s hard for a human to understand ‘why’. And I think unfortunately that was the most devastating part, why did this happen to such a wonderful person?
Additionally, Kelly Holland was among the hundreds who came out and said her husband works in law enforcement and knew Sgt. Fishman and the other two deputies were injured.
“It’s been a tough week. As you can imagine, all law enforcement felt the pain of this and the department was rocked. But we know they must push forward and continue to protect and serve our community,” Holland said.
David Rutledge is a family friend who grew up with Fishman and can only say that it is just a sad situation.
“I don’t think words can explain it,” Rutledge said. “Nobody knows what’s going to happen, and nobody knows how to react when it happens.”
Moody shared that the community that comes together shows what a man Fishman was.
“I think that the community can do this, to show Sara and the children and his mother and father and his family and his brothers what he meant to the community is just the least we can do for them. ‘ said Moody.
Sergeant Fishman leaves behind a wife and two children. His funeral will be held this Tuesday at 11 a.m. at the University of Mount Olive
