Former Trump White House Press Secretary Sarah Sanders won Tuesday’s Republican gubernatorial primary in Arkansas.
Sanders, the daughter of former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee, was endorsed by former President Donald Trump and easily defeated radio host Doc Washburn, 82.2% to his 17.8%, the race based on 34% of county reports was proclaimed.
Washburn had made a long-term offer to anger Sanders, who served as Trump’s chief spokesman for 23 months between 2017 and 2019 but failed to bridge the wide gap in polls and fundraising.
Sanders criss-crossed the state running a campaign promoting conservative values and focused on education, economic development, and rebuilding the state’s workforce and infrastructure.
“We need to do our jobs better, and that starts at the ground level — we need to make sure we’re actually educating our kids, not indoctrinating them, that we’re empowering parents, not government bureaucrats, and that we’re preparing kids for the world of work — not.” a lifelong dependency on government,” she told KATV over the weekend.
Sanders is the favorite to win the November election and will succeed Republican governor Asa Hutchinson with a limited term. She will likely run against Democrat Chris Jones, a nuclear engineer and minister.
