Ex-Destiny’s Child LeToya Luckett is cooking with Jalen Rose for Christmas

LeToya Luckett is an original member of Destiny’s Child and a proud product of Houston. And while she’ll rattle off a list of her favorite spots (the Breakfast Klub, Turkey Leg Hut, and Burns Original BBQ), she didn’t have the typical Houston upbringing.

“My friends have been to the mall, the movies, homecoming and proms and stuff like that. Like we didn’t really have a normal childhood,” she told me on this week’s episode of Renaissance Man.

Instead, “we spent that time in rehearsals watching documentaries about our favorite artists, seeing performances from Whitney Houston, Anita Baker and Chaka Khan. This is how we spend our time. Just like all of you [athletes] watch tape. We’ll watch the tape. So I almost got the feeling that they groom us like athletes. As if we were training.”

They also toured with legends like Boyz II Men.

LeToya said, “We just learned so much from the experience of watching them every night. I mean, seriously, who gets better than Boyz II Men. Sharing the stage with them was mind-blowing.”

And even as they made it big and became superstars, LeToya said they barely knew it, nor did they take the time to poke the ball and celebrate. They just kept working on their dream. Let’s face it, the girls she dreamed up — Beyoncé and Kelly Rowland — didn’t have overnight success.

“And I think that was probably a good thing since we’re so young so we don’t get distracted. We would start to feel ourselves. Our parents were very involved, so I think it was probably best for us to keep our feet on the ground and focus on work and continue to develop as artists,” she said, adding, “I don’t think that people know how much hard work, time, dedication, sacrifice and tears went into it.”

There was no microwave fame for LeToya and she has been open about her struggles after leaving the group in 2000. But need and hard work is why it has enduring power. As a mother of two, LeToya is starring in two Christmas movies this year. The first is the self-directed The Great Holiday Bake War, and she also stars alongside Romeo Miller in A Miracle Before Christmas, which premieres December 23 on BET+.

And yes, it’s a Christmas movie and it’s packed with all the usual Christmas lessons. But it was also significant because at the end of filming, Romeo’s sister, Tytyana Miller, tragically died, leaving her family devastated.

“This man lost his sister on the last day of shooting,” she said of her co-star. “And he came. He was done and he left. And he continued his grief. And I thought, ‘There’s no way I would have been able to get out of bed.’ He made it seem like I didn’t want to cause anyone any inconvenience. I know this is our last day of shooting.” There would have to be a very different day of shooting or a week or something. The whole process would take a while. But he said, ‘I finish what I start and I come out with a great attitude.’ And that just goes to show that there’s so much to him and that I have a whole different respect for him afterwards.”

And since she’s fast becoming the Christmas movie queen, I needed to know her favorites. These include “Serendipity”, “The Preacher’s Wife”, “This Christmas” and of course “Home Alone”.

But she notes, “We need to do more urban vacation movies.”

That led me to my next important question: is Trading Places a Christmas movie?

“‘Trading Places’ is one of my all-time favorite movies,” LeToya said, “but you’re right. Because the scene where he opens up and he’s on his knees and he’s talking to the cop. It was definitely holiday season. The whole movie is about vacations.”

So that’s done. LeToya spoke: “Trading Places” is indeed a Christmas movie. And probably the dirtiest Santa suit ever seen on screen.
