Eurovision 2022: Israeli candidate Michael Ben David withdraws from the shows in Turin because of security problems

Israel’s Eurovision Act will not perform at the live shows in Turin, it has been announced

The final of the Eurovision Song Contest is set to take place in the Italian city on May 14 – following Måneskin’s win in 2021 – with two semi-finals on May 10 and 12.

Israel was to be represented by Michael Ben David with his song “IM”.

However, on Tuesday (April 12) it was announced that he would not be traveling to Turin for the competition.

This is due to an ongoing strike at the country’s foreign ministry, meaning Israel’s Shin Bet security service is unable to send David to compete.

“With immediate effect, the Israeli delegation will not attend Eurovision in Turin due to the Foreign Ministry strike affecting security protocols,” read a tweet from Israel’s official Eurovision account.

An EBU spokesman said talks were being held to determine whether Israel would withdraw from the competition entirely or if they would continue to compete remotely.

During last year’s competition, 2020 frontrunner Daði Frey performed from home via video link after a member of his band tested positive for Covid-19.

If Israel pulls out, they will become the second country not to perform in 2022 after Russia was banned from Eurovision after invading Ukraine.

Meanwhile, Ukraine’s Kalush Orchestra has said they want to be “another mouthpiece” for their country amid the war.
