Happiness star Colman Domingo has stated that he spends between 30 and 40 hours preparing each episode.
The ongoing second season of the hit HBO series sees Rue (Zendaya) relapse into addiction recovery, with sponsor Ali (Domingo) having a deep bond. more and more meaningful.
In a recent interview with Vulture,Domingo talked about the importance of his role and the long process he took to prepare for his scenes.
Because Euphoria’s The late 2020 special aired – in which Rue and Ali sat in conversation for an hour – Domingo said he spent “at least 120 hours” rehearsing.
While his typical rehearsal time isn’t nearly as long in just a few scenes, he still manages to achieve an average prep time of 30 to 40 hours per episode.
Domingo said he recognized the appeal of his performance and the role the character played in Rue’s recovery and the much-needed support for the family.
“He saw a little bit of himself in Rue, and that’s how he knew how to deal with her,” Domingo said.
He also shares ways Happiness Creator Sam Levinson sought to make the awkward dinner scene in the latest episode feel real and organic, encouraging the actors to let the conversation flow and embrace silences before reacting.
“He wanted to give us that space because he knew the connection between Ali and Rue was very important,” noted Domingo.
“We practice on our own in such a way that during the day, we are in a moment of dancing together.”
Happiness can now be watched on Sky and NOW in the UK and HBO Max in the US.
