Encanto earns $12 million in second week

No new competition to break its rhythm, Disney’s Encanto held on to the top spot at the domestic box office for the second consecutive week, grossing an additional $12.3 million. The musical fantasy cartoon has earned $57.6 million domestically, and its 54% drop is in line with other Thanksgiving weekend releases from the Mouse House.

But mixed reviews and lack of familiarity with the source material may play a role in the eternal‘underperforming at the box office. The rest has been taken care of by the pandemic, which has also affected other MCU titles like Black Widow and Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings.

Breaking into the top 5 this weekend is a surprising newcomer — based on faith Christmas with the Chosen: The Messengers. The Fathom Events release comes out midweek and is predicted to make around $3.5 million Friday through Sunday, good enough for a spot in the top five.
