A stroke is a life-threatening emergency that can result in long-term health complications for those affected.

Over 100,000 people suffer a stroke in the UK each year and are responsible for over 38,000 deaths.

The chef – who is played by actor Mark Charnock in the ITV soap – broke down just minutes after his engagement to Rhona Goskirk.

The couple eventually proposed — and accepted — at the same time.

But after rushing home in a fit of dizziness to find the ring, Marlon suddenly felt strange.

As he frantically searched for the ring, he stopped and realized that half of his face was frozen.

When he collapsed to the ground, he was unable to call for help — or even make a sound.

Marlon was clearly frightened by the special effects and sounds that showed him struggling to form thoughts.

The clock ticked the slow passage of time as the Dingles and others continued to celebrate.

But when Rhona and April realized he wasn’t back, April went to get him.

She found him collapsed on the floor but couldn’t understand what he was trying to say.

She called an ambulance and asked for help, but Marlon couldn’t understand what she was saying.

“Dad, please just talk to me,” she said.

But when the ambulance arrived, Rhona came out of the pub and saw what was going on.

As he was being loaded into the ambulance, Rhona ran after him in her car with Vanessa, leaving April with Mary.

Special effects showed Marlon frozen and unable to understand what was going on.

Arriving at the hospital, Rhona received an update from the doctor: “Marlon has suffered a massive stroke.

“His speech and mobility are severely impaired. He needs surgery to remove the clot blocking the artery to his brain.

“We won’t know how bad it is until after the operation. He’s passed out and unconscious – what he can understand is hard to say.”

Rhona sought him out but was afraid of what she would find – and she promised to marry him and always be there for him.

But the doctors came to pick him up for an operation and she had to go.

Inwardly, Marlon asked Rhona to stay and he couldn’t understand why she was leaving him.

Viewers were heartbroken by the scene but blown away by the episode.

One wrote: “Marlon is already such an emotional but incredibly well acted episode, well done to @emmerdale for portraying the signs of a stroke.”

Another added: “Amazing acting by Mark Charnock. Even my dog looks at it.”
