Emmanuel Petit delivers Gabriel Martinelli’s verdict during Arsenal’s win over Palace

Emmanuel Petit was full of praise for Gabriel Martinelli for the “perfect” first touch that led to his opening goal in Arsenal’s win against coachless Crystal Palace on Sunday.

Following Arsenal legend Patrick Vieira’s sacking midweek, Palace, who were winless in 11 games before the London derby, were fully aware they had a job to do against the Premier League leaders and ended up a paste could stand.

Well, when 21-year-old Martinelli, who missed his penalty when Mikel Arteta’s side were flown out of Europe by Sporting Lisbon in midweek, scored after 28 minutes, players in Palace colors feared the worst.

It was a typically quick start for the Gunners, with Bukayo feeding Saka Martinelli for the opener before adding his name to the scorers’ list before half-time.

Returning from the break after the break, Arsenal once again faced relegation-threatened Palace, with Granit Xhaka showing his scoring instincts by scoring his side’s third goal before Saka scored his second between Jeffery Schlupp’s consolation goal.

Highbury legend Petit was impressed by what he saw of Martinelli and that’s what he had to say about the Brazilian star, he told Premier League Productions (19/03/23 at 14:50).

“It was a great finish from him (Martinelli),” said Petit. “It was good movement and passing – it’s a good cross from Saka, what a great finish.

“The first touch is perfect because he gets the ball moving and then he just has to shoot after it, then the angle was perfect. Mighty at his feet.”

TO YOU MANCHESTER CITY

Palace were there and Arsenal made sure they dealt with them in typical title-winning style.

If you want to be champions you can’t afford too many hiccups and you have to be ruthless, which is exactly what Arteta’s men were against the Eagles.

Most importantly for Arsenal their lead at the top of the Premier League is now eight points over Manchester City, yes they played an extra game but they’d rather have the points on the board.
